School Year Begins

Summer is over. School is back in session. I'm sure you are like me wishing for the relaxation of summer as you drive kids to and from sports and activities.

Two of my children swim during the school year. School-year swimming is different. Why? Is it the indoor pool? The more focused competitive meets? The kids are on a team, but there is less time during the school year to be a team. No long days lounging at the pool. Homework and other commitments are a factor. School-year seems all business, while summer swimming is all fun!

Do your children swim during the school year? Jessica and James swim at Health Unlimited. I've see swimmers...Matt, Robert, Nate, Robert, Jesse, and Matt...at HU as well. Where do your kids swim? I'd like to know what school-year swim teams are out there. I know of the Eagles and the Retrievers. What are the other teams? e-mail me: JillAnneBerry@msn.com If your kids play another sport(s) during the school year, let me know! Wahoos are a talented group of athletes, musicians, etc. Let's showcase our talents!

My plan is to keep this blog/website going during the school year as a resource for Wahoos parents and swimmers. Would you like to write an article? On swimming or sportsmanship or being a good sports parent or swimsuits or diving sticks or just about anything that has even a little to do with swimming! Let me know! Send me your article with a photo to JillAnneBerry@msn.com If you find a link to an article on swimming, send me a link.

Last Gasp of Summer Events at the Pool

Coach Jill loved the photo album. She was astounded by the number of photos. She loved that all families were represented in the family section of the album. I can't wait for next swim season to do it all again!

I plan on posting news throughout the school year, so stay tuned.

What's your opinion on swimmers wearing high-tech swim suits to improve their performance? Do you think it is fair that some swimmers have an unfair advantage? Or should swimmers be allowed to spend what they want on swim suits? Runners are not restricted to buying certain shoes.

The Washington Post took on the issue of Masters swimmers wearing the performance suits.

What do you think? Send me an e-mail and I will compile all responses in to a post. I won't use names, so go ahead and state an opinion.

How Can I Get a Wahoos Photo?

You may have noticed that your family or swimmer was photographed during swim season. I photographed just about every Wahoos family. Two other Wahoos moms also took many photographs of swimmers, families, and swim team activities. Many of the photographs of Wahoos families and swimmers from Swim Season 2009 will be shown in the slideshow at the end-of-season awards ceremony on Sunday. Photos are also on this website/blog.

If you would like a copy of one of the photographs taken, see top right box on this page. In the box, there are links to two Kodak galleries: Families A-Z AND Coaching Kids, Cheering Kids, Friendship, and Heat Winners. All photographs taken during the season are in these two files.

There are two ways to obtain a photograph from the KodakGallery.com. Click on one of the galleries:

1. In the gallery, click on photo that you want. Go to "Buy Prints." Choose "This Photo $0.15." Click "Done." Go to checkout for purchase. You can do this for one photo or multiple photos.

OR

2. In the gallery, click on photo that you want. Go to "Share." Choose "This Photo." Add your e-mail address to dialog box. Kodak will send photo to your e-mail address. You can save the photo(s) to a CD so that you can print the photo at Walmart/CVS OR you can save the photo to your computer to use in an online scrapbook or print at home.

Editor's Note: I know that in previous years, photos were printed out and hung on poster boards at the awards ceremony. This year in a bid to go green, we are going paperless by displaying photos on this blog, on the slideshow at the awards ceremony, and on the KodakGallery.com website. I apologize for any inconvenience caused to swim families.

Thanks to Stacie, mom to Morgan, and Rita, mom to Justin, for taking time out of their swim meets to take photographs of our swimmers. Their efforts are very much appreciated.

I would like to thank Stacie for uploading all the photographs to the Kodak Gallery.

The slideshow was created by 13-14 swimmer Ryan. Ryan took time out of his summer to create a fabulous slideshow showcasing the Wahoos swim season 2009. If you see Ryan at the pool, tell him "Thank you" for a job well done!

Wahoos Record Is Broken

Since 1994 the girls 11-12 50 back record has remained unbroken. Not anymore. The 35.68 record was broken by swimmer Caroline. The new record is an impressive 35.60. Way to go, Caroline!

Wahoos Tie with Westminster Riding Club

At the end of the Breaststroke events, the score was Westminster Riding Club 227, West Howard 205. Our opponent's lead seemed insurmountable. Wahoo relay teams moved the score in the right direction with a rebound of 39 points. The meet ended in a tie score of 244 to 244.

--

Today's meet was about more than swimming races. It was Wahoos Senior Day. Seven senior swimmers were honored at the beginning of their last individual event of the meet. All the swimmers are on their way to college in the fall. Congratulations, senior swimmers!

Announcer Rick read out speeches about each swimmer written by their parents. As well as swimming, our senior swimmers have a wide variety of interests, including business, drama, cross country, dance, basketball, theater, adventure games, reading, and a myriad of other activities. Wahoos have a well-rounded and talented group of senior swimmers.

Seniors Moms/Dads wore decorated photo rosettes (created by Debbie, mom to swimmers Mark and Matthew). While standing on the diving block, swimmers were presented with a colorful bouquet of flowers including sunflowers from grounds of the pool (assembled by Debbie, as well). Girl swimmers wore tiaras and pink feather boas, while the guy swimmers wore gold top hats and sunglasses (chosen by swimmer Cassie).

Upcoming Events for Swim Season 2009

Divisional Championships -- 7/25/09, South Carroll Swim Club

This year, the top four swimmers in each event in each age-group are eligible to go to Divisional Championships. South Carroll has an 8-lane pool and CMSL rules allow top four to participate when 8-lane pools are hosting.

The matrix listing all top 10 swimmers as of 7/11 will be located at the picnic table at the deep end of the pool during practices this week. Team Rep. Mary Pat Jordan will also be circulating with the matrix and will be available to answer questions. Please check your rankings and circle any event you wish to swim (3 maximum) or scratch your name if you are unable to participate.

The top four freestyle times are eligible to swim on a relay. In many cases, swimmers with lower rankings qualify to go to divisionals if higher ranked swimmers choose other events or can’t attend the meet. The Divisionals meet line-up will be completed after the meet on Saturday when the final top four rankings are established and will be emailed to the team on Sunday afternoon.

The cost of each event is $4 (cash or check payable to West Howard Swim Club, in sealed envelope with name and amount written on it) and Mary Pat will be collecting entry fees.

The bulletin board has a sign-up sheet for Divisional meet t-shirts as well. There will be a very limited t-shirt supply at the meet. If you sign up for a t-shirt and do not end up on the final qualifying team, your check will be returned to you. Checks should be made payable to West Howard Swim Club and Kristy Baldwin will be collecting money for the shirts.

Novice Meet -- 7/20/09, Wynnewood Swim Club

We have extended the Novice Meet sign up for an extra day. Please enter your events by end of practice Wednesday. Events are $3.50 per event and you can give your money in a sealed enveloped with name and events to Coach Jill. Don't miss out on this great meet!

Straehle CMSL Championships -- 7/22/09, Four Seasons Swim Club

Straehle qualifiers in individual events are also posted on the bulletin board. Please let Coach Jill know this week if you can participate and to choose your events. The cost is $4 per event, cash or checks payable to West Howard Swim Club. Relay swimmers will be contacted by Coach Jill. T-shirts for Straehle can be purchased at the meet.

Practice Schedule next week

Practice will be held next week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for Divisional and Straehle swimmers. Practice will be from 9-10 a.m for 11-overs, and 10-10:45 for 10-unders. No practice on Wednesday due to the Straehle meet.

Ice Cream Social this Friday

Our final pre-meet team social will be held this Friday at 6 p.m. The sign-up sheet will be posted tomorrow morning.

Swimming from the Parent's Perspective

From time to time I need an answer to a swimming related question. When I am at the pool a good person to approach is Coach Jill. She has been the Wahoos coach for about 12 years. She knows swimming. She cares deeply about her swimmers. As a recreational swimmer I have very little knowledge about competitive swimming. Coach Jill has answered many questions of mine -- no matter how basic!

Another person to ask when you need a question answered is Mary Pat Jordan. Did you know that she was a competitive swimmer in college? Her three children all swim yearround. Mary Pat is a good resource for questions related to being a swim parent.

Other good resources for parents of swimmers are as follows (click on highlighted link):

Swimmers of the Week: July 11, 2009

10-Under Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 7/11/09

Female: Abigail Jones - 7

Abigail is new to the swim team this summer and has worked hard to improve all her strokes. She had a great meet at Hammond Park, doing personal best times in all three of her events. She took off 3 seconds in freestyle and nearly 3 more in backstroke. She also shaved off an amazing 11 seconds in butterfly after learning this difficult stroke just a few weeks ago!!!

Male: Ethan Welsh – 10

Ethan is a veteran Wahoo swimmer who is very dedicated with excellent practice habits. This week he even took the initiative to swim in two practice groups each day! His efforts paid off when he swam 3 best times on Saturday, shaving off 3 seconds in breaststroke, almost 2 in fly, and a huge 9 seconds in 100 IM!!!

11-Over Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 7/11/09

Female: Lanie Swanhart - 15

Lanie has been on our team for many summers and has developed excellent technique in all of her strokes. She displayed perfectly on Saturday how to finish a race strong into the wall, touching out an opponent by just a tenth of a second in 100 free! This resulted in a personal best by nearly 3 seconds, and in her 100 IM she improved by another 2 seconds!!!

Male: Brendan Caffey - 14

Brendan is second-year Wahoo swimmer who had three great swims at Hammond Park. He swam more than 5 seconds faster in 100 free, took off another second in 50 breaststroke and had a great 50 on the relay. His consistent practice attendance has helped him come a long way in just two seasons on swim team!!

Swimmers of the Week: July 3, 2009

10-Under Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 7/03/09

Female: Morgan Stolba - 6

Morgan is a first-year team member with a lot of determination. Her hard work in practice has helped her to improve her freestyle time by more than 18 seconds since time trials and another 48 seconds in backstroke! At the meet against Springlake she took off 8 seconds in free and 13 in backstroke since the last meet, going under a minute in both events for the first time!!!

Male: Ryan Jones - 9

Ryan just joined the Wahoos this summer and has advanced greatly since the season began. He has worked hard to improve his freestyle and backstroke, and has learned breaststroke and butterfly in a few short weeks! He had a great meet on Friday, taking 21 seconds off of 50 free, 5 seconds in breaststroke and competed in butterfly for the first time!!

11-Over Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 7/03/09

Female: Kathleen Mensing – 12

Kathleen is a returning swimmer who always has a happy, positive attitude both in and out of the pool. She had a great meet on Friday with personal best times in all three of her events! She took off over a second in 50 free from just a week ago, and 8 second in back and 6 in breaststroke since time trials!!

Male: Robert McClure – 14

Robert is another veteran Wahoo swimmer who had some great swims on Friday. Consistent practice attendance helped him take time off both of his individual events and swim a personal best relay split. He went 3 seconds faster in 50 breaststroke, and nearly 8 seconds faster in 100 IM!!!
