Wahoos Swam Hard
Our swimmers worked hard from practice laps to dives off the starting blocks. Many earned points for the team. Many improved their times. Although the result was not what we wanted, all did their best.
A key change this season is team comraderie. Wahoo swimmers have always exhibited team spirit. You can't help, but notice the way that the kids parade in to the pool at home or away. Their cheers -- old and new -- show a group of swimmers who are working together as a team.
From the first swim meet our family participated in eight years ago, I still get fired up hearing the V-I-C-T-O-R-Y cheer. This season, under the helm of new Coach Justin Owens, the team now sing a Hawaiian-type cheer, in addition to the old cheer. The kids start chanting quietly from down on their knees. The volume increases as the swimmers rise to a standing position. I am proud of how our swimmers work together both in the pool and out.
One more regular season meet to go. Wahoos host South Carroll next Saturday. GO WAHOOS!

Putting the Loss Behind Us: Gearing up for Two Swim Meets This Week
After a tough, hard fought meet v. Springlake, Wahoos gear up for swim meets this coming week.
The score for the Springlake meet was 262 to 224. Wahoos were missing swimmers in a few age groups. Relays had to be shuffled to make up for the absence of swimmers.
Wahoos moms and dads may have noticed the "pool photographers" in action at swim meets. Jill B. -- mom Julia, Jessica, and James -- will be taking individual photos of each swimmer for this blog and the end-of-season slideshow during the meets and during practice. She will also take candid shots of kids at meets. Note: If you requested that your child not be photographed, I will not post your child's photo on this blog, but I will include it in the slideshow.
Rita W. -- mom of Justin -- and Stacie S. -- mom to Morgan and D.J. -- will take action shots otherwise known as "Wow, I can see every single drop of water or bubble as that swimmer does his turn!" as they did last year. Thank you Rita and Stacie! Look out for photo collages in the coming weeks.
On Wednesday, July 7, Wahoos will swim against neighborhood swim club -- Cattail Creek. The meet begins at 6 p.m. with warmups at 5 p.m. This meet is not a CMSL-sanctioned meet.
On Saturday, July 10, Wahoos will swim at South Carroll. The meet begins at 9 a.m. with warmups at 8 a.m.
Go Wahoos!

Tight Races at 1st Meet
Yearround swimmers had a slight edge due to rigorous and frequent practices during the school year. Summer swimmers jumped in to the pool earlier this summer from lacrosse, softball, baseball, soccer, track, band, and any number of other activities. With only a few weeks of practice, summer swimmers quickly got up to speed.
As Coach Jill pointed out at the pre-meet pep talk/cheer session, Wahoos swimmers have only had two morning practices and a few weeks of afterschool practices to get ready for the 2010 season. Thanks to #Snomageddon and an extended school year, summer swim season got a late start.
Scenes from the meet...
The National Anthem played by swimmer Bryan.
Matt broke the old pool record of 16.73 in the Free with 16.22! Way to go Matt!

Novice, Straehle, and Divisional Meets Explained
As a new member of the team you may have heard the terms "Novice," "Straehle," and "Divisional." What are these meets? Which swimmers qualify? Mary Pat Jordan, Swim Team Rep., explains:
We have watched our Wahoos compete in 3 dual meets for a 3-1 record. We are looking forward to our last 2 dual meets and 3 “championship” meets (the Novice Meet, the Straehle Invitational Meet, and the Divisional Championship Meet). These end-of-the-season meets allow our swimmers to compete against swimmers from across the CMSL (Central Maryland Swim League). For new families or those who just need a reminder, below is a brief explanation of each of these meets.
The Novice Meet will be held on Monday, July 20 at Wynnewood Swim Club. This meet is designed for swimmers who are not usually in the fastest heat and do not usually place in dual meets. The qualification times are listed as “no faster than...” The events and times are posted by the swim team bulletin board. It is a multi-team event with lots of music, good food, and of course fast swimming! (Editor's note: In years past, heat winners win a colorful ball with the swimmer's name and time written on it!)
The Straehle Invitational Swim Meet will be held on Wednesday, July 22 at the 4 Seasons Sports Complex, in Hampstead, Maryland. This meet is an elite championship meet where swimmers must meet a pre-determined qualifying standard. Swimmers compete against other swimmers from all teams in the Central Maryland Swim League. The swimmers who have qualified are notified by Coach Jill. A list of swimmers who have already qualified for the Straehle is posted on the swim team bulletin board.
The Divisional Championship Meet will be held on Saturday, July 25 at South Carroll Swim Club, in Sykesville, Maryland. This meet is the final meet of the summer swim season. The top 4 Wahoo swimmers in each event will compete against the other teams in our division.

Swimmers of the Week!
10-Under Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 6/27/09
Female: Grace Meissner – 6
Grace is a second-year swimmer who swims with incredible “grace” for a six-year-old. She has quickly learned all 4 strokes and showed off her butterfly in a meet for the first time last Saturday. She also improved her freestyle by nearly 7 seconds and placed third, and shaved another 4 seconds off of her backstroke to win first place!!
Male: Joseph Roschella – 10
Joseph is a veteran Wahoo swimmer with great determination whenever he’s in the pool. He had a great meet against Andover with three very exciting first place finishes, each of them by fractions of a second! All three races resulted in new personal best times for Joseph as well!!!
11-Over Swimmers of the Week
For week ending 6/27/09
Female: Amanda Baldwin - 14
Amanda has been a Wahoo swimmer for several summers and always displays a great attitude in both practice and at meets. Her efforts paid off in our second meet where she scored two third place finishes and swam a personal best relay split. She also improved her 100 IM time by nearly 5 seconds and took off more than a second in 50 breaststroke!!
Male: James Sirenne – 11
James is a new swimmer this year who has come a long way in just a few short weeks as a first-time swimmer. He has improved significantly in both freestyle and backstroke, and has quickly learned breaststroke as well! Last Saturday he swam personal best times in all three of his events, improving by 11 seconds in 50 free, 16 seconds in backstroke and almost 6 seconds in breaststroke!!
Congratulations to all Swimmers of the Week from Coach Jill!
