Volunteering and Meet Update

A Note from Kay Browning, Wahoos Volunteers Rep!

Congratulations to all Wahoos swimmers who competed in the meet on
Saturday. Even though we did not win, many swimmers had best times.
Check out the swim team bulletin board to see who was chosen as the
swimmers of the week.

*Thanks* to the many parent volunteers who worked during the meet.

Unfortunately we had more than 10 volunteers who did not show up to
their assignments. As you saw on Saturday it takes all of us to
ensure the meet moves smoothly. Please review the volunteer assignments
on the pool bulletin board and in the e-mail sent to all swim team
families. If you cannot work during your assigned position, we would
appreciate it if you let us know early in the week. It would be much
appreciated if you could try to make a switch with another family or
find a substitute.

Tight Races at 1st Meet

The Wahoos narrowly missed a win at the first meet v. Dulaney. We were strong in some age categories. Lacked a little depth in other age groups. Through it all Wahoos swimmers showed grit and determination.

Yearround swimmers had a slight edge due to rigorous and frequent practices during the school year. Summer swimmers jumped in to the pool earlier this summer from lacrosse, softball, baseball, soccer, track, band, and any number of other activities. With only a few weeks of practice, summer swimmers quickly got up to speed.

As Coach Jill pointed out at the pre-meet pep talk/cheer session, Wahoos swimmers have only had two morning practices and a few weeks of afterschool practices to get ready for the 2010 season. Thanks to #Snomageddon and an extended school year, summer swim season got a late start.

Scenes from the meet...

Team cheer...blue paint optional!

Words of encouragement from Coach Jill before the meet.

Cheering before the meet!

Matt broke the old pool record of 16.73 in the Free with 16.22! Way to go Matt!

Volunteers Needed for Saturday's Meet

***PLEASE - WE ARE IN NEED OF SOMEMORE VOLUNTEERS ON SATURDAY****

We still need help in the morning setting up with concessions, making coffee, help grilling eggs, and a bunch of little things so that our concessions run smoothly.

We still are in need of 2 second half timers.

If you can help in anyway this would be much appreciated! Please see the sign up sheet on the bulleton board.

Thanks for volunteering!

Dinner, Dulaney, and Drinks!

Don't Forget!

See you on Friday at the Pep Rally! Bring a pasta dish to feed 8-12 people. Pep Rally is from 6-8 p.m.

Don't forget to bring your drink donation to the Pep Rally (at the latest as drinks are needed for Saturday's meet)! See list on swim team bulletin board!

The first official Wahoos meet is Saturday v. Dulaney. We are at home. Arrive at the pool at 7:30 a.m. for warmups. Meet starts at 9 a.m. Park at the church. Have your swimmer(s) sign in with the coaches. Bring your food donation to the concession stand. The list of items is on the swim team bulletin board.

Check the swim team bulletin board for your volunteer assignment. Remember: The Wahoos swim team is a volunteer run organization. The team cannot function unless EVERY parent fulfills his/her volunteer commitment.

Can't do your volunteer assignment? Find a friend to cover your assigned job! Don't leave the team in a lurch!

Resources for Swim Moms, Dads, and Grandparents!

Some resources that summer swim parents may find useful...

From the American Swimming Coaches Association:

A now-adult former swimmer explains what her coach meant to her with this quote:
He insisted that a fifth place finish in a race could have just as much impact on the outcome of a meet as the first place finish.
I don't know about you, but I love that in swimming each swimmer can make a contribution to the team even if the swimmer does not come in first.

Ever wonder what the coaches are telling your young swimmer? Here's an informative article on coaching young swimmers. Click here.

From USA Swimming

A Q&A. Good tips on the nervous swimmer. Click here.

A How-to Guide to be a Winning Parent of a Swimmer. Click here.

And yes, there is even an organization for Swim Moms! You can join the National Association of Swim Moms! I even found a Swim Dad group...sort of.

There is a sign up sheet. We need to get a headcount for the Pep Rally, so make sure to sign up your family and to indicate what dish/item you will bring.

Just bring a dish that will feed 8 to 12 people, so we have enough food for everyone. In case you were wondering we have a little over 100 famlies and 195 swimmers to feed. :)

Volunteers

A copy of the volunteer sheets is posted on the swim team bulletin board at the pool. Please check to see what you are signed up for. The meet cannot function without volunteers like you. Please complete your volunteer assignment at the meet.

There are a few open spots - Timers for 2nd half in lanes 5 and 8 I believe, and concessions could use a few hands. If you are interested in filling in on those spots please email - Kay B., C2swim@verizon.net or Mary Pat, marypatjordan@aol.com as soon as possible. Thanks for volunteering!

Urgent! Stroke and Turn Judges Needed!

Swim Team Families! We are in urgent need of some HELP . . .

After reviewing the volunteer sign up forms, we noticed that we do not have enough Stroke and Turn Judges.

At this point we only have 4 of the 15 spots covered and will have to forfeit any meet that we do not provide a stroke and turn judge. To run a meet smoothly we must provide 2-3 volunteers at each meet.

No experience necessary to become a Stroke & Turn Judge. Training provided!
  • Each volunteer would work a maximum of half of a meet.
  • You don't have to have a swimming background to be a judge.
  • You'll receive complete training assisted by a video tape with many examples that will provide all the information you need to be a judge.
  • If you have already volunteered in a different area, we can easily switch you.
Here are some reasons why you may want to consider becoming a Stroke and Turn Judge:
  • Great front row view of all events in the meet.
  • Small group training with Coach Jill and a CMSL referee at West Howard for less than an hour.
  • The great feeling that comes with volunteering.
You can practice with our own swimmers at time trials this Saturday (there is no official judging at time trials).

Please let Mary Pat or Lynda know if you are interested in helping in this area.

New Event: Sip 'n Swim June 17

First SIP N SWIM event at the pool!

During the summer, we will occasionally have a local restaurant sponsor the meal for a set $fee. You order (on the bulletin board at the pool), you pay, and we bring your dinner to you and your family at the pool that night!

When: Thursday 6/17 at 6 p.m.
FEATURING PIZZA HUT PIZZA
Sign up to order your pizza (10.60/per large pizza); Sign up sheet is on the board at the pool. Drop your check/money at the front desk--checks made payable to pool.

Bring your own drinks etc and anything else you want to enjoy your meal with your family and friends.
