It's Time for the End-of-Season Party! Wednesday, July 28 from 6-9 p.m.!
***SWIM TEAM'S END-OF-SEASON PARTY****
It's hard to believe the season is coming to an end already!
Our End of Season Party will be Wednesday, July 28th from 6 - 9. There will be food from Town Grill, music, and lots of fun!!
We will honor our senior swimmers, give awards to swimmers in each age category (boy and girl awards for each age category), and have fun!
There will be a slideshow with highlights from the season!
***Please check the Swim Team Board for a sign up for food.
We'll be having a large cake at the End-of-Season Party, so please bring a side dish or a salad rather than a dessert. The food will be provided by the Town Grill. We'll use the sodas and water left over from the swim season donations.
If you have any questions or if you know you won't be able to get to the pool by Friday and still want us to count you in on the food, please email Lynda Pelkey (lpelkey@comcast.net) with how many family members will be coming.
Hope to see everyone there!

Update from Wahoos Reps, End-of-Season Meets
From Mary Pat Jordan and Lynda Pelkey -- Wahoos Swim Reps
We have watched our Wahoos compete and improve all season. We are looking forward to our last home meet against Andover (July 24) and the 3 “championship” meets (the Novice meet, the Straehle Invitational Meet and the Divisional Championship Meet). These end-of-the-season meets allow our swimmers to compete against swimmers from across the CMSL. For new families or those who just need a reminder, below is a brief explanation of each of these meets.

For new families or those who just need a reminder, below is a brief explanation of each of these meets.
The Novice Meet will be held on Monday, July 26 at Wynnewood Swim Club. This meet is designed for swimmers who are not usually in the fastest heat and do not usually place in dual meets. The qualification times are listed as “no faster than . . .”.
***The events and individual swimmer’s times are posted by the swim team bulletin board. It is a multi-team event with lots of music, good food and of course fast swimming!
The Straehle Invitational Swim Meet will be held on Wednesday, July 28 at the 4 Seasons Sports Complex. This meet is an elite championship meet that swimmers must meet a pre-determined qualifying standard. Swimmers compete against other swimmers from all teams in the Central Maryland Swim League.
***The swimmers who have qualified are listed on the bulletin board and will be notified by Coach Jill.
The Divisional Championship Meet will be held on Saturday, July 31 at South Carroll Swim Club. This meet is the final meet of the swim season against all 5 teams in Division 2. The top 4 Wahoos swimmers in each event will compete against the other teams in our division.
***Please check Coach Jill’s clipboard and swimmer ranking. EVERYONE (regardless of ranking) should verify if you are available by circling the events your child would like to swim or cross your swimmers name off the list if they are not available.
If you need further clarification, feel free to contact marypatjordan@aol.com or lpelkey@comcast.net

EARTHQUAKE!
In our home, my husband woke up immediately while the kids and I slept through the earthquake. What can I say the Berry Family sleep like logs.
According to my husband and the girls, the earthquake was the talk of swim practice this morning. They heard questions like:
Did you feel the earthquake?
Did you hear it?
Did you sleep through it?
Did you go bolt upright in bed?
The epicenter was Germantown, MD, about a 35-minute drive from the pool. 3.6 magnitude. Thankfully, no injuries or damage was reported. Can you believe we had an earthquake so close to us?
According to MSNBC:
Have you ever experienced an earthquake. I was a sophomore in college in Lancaster, PA. Sitting in my 2nd floor dorm room, I heard a noise that sounded like all of my upstairs neighbors were dropping their metal-framed bunk beds at once. I later heard that it was a small earthquake.
Here are some local responses to the earthquake from NBC Washington -- click on highlighted text.

The 3.6 magnitude earthquake hit at 5:04 a.m. The earthquake was about 3 miles deep and struck in an area along Interstate 270. Putting the Loss Behind Us: Gearing up for Two Swim Meets This Week
After a tough, hard fought meet v. Springlake, Wahoos gear up for swim meets this coming week.
The score for the Springlake meet was 262 to 224. Wahoos were missing swimmers in a few age groups. Relays had to be shuffled to make up for the absence of swimmers.
Wahoos moms and dads may have noticed the "pool photographers" in action at swim meets. Jill B. -- mom Julia, Jessica, and James -- will be taking individual photos of each swimmer for this blog and the end-of-season slideshow during the meets and during practice. She will also take candid shots of kids at meets. Note: If you requested that your child not be photographed, I will not post your child's photo on this blog, but I will include it in the slideshow.
Rita W. -- mom of Justin -- and Stacie S. -- mom to Morgan and D.J. -- will take action shots otherwise known as "Wow, I can see every single drop of water or bubble as that swimmer does his turn!" as they did last year. Thank you Rita and Stacie! Look out for photo collages in the coming weeks.
On Wednesday, July 7, Wahoos will swim against neighborhood swim club -- Cattail Creek. The meet begins at 6 p.m. with warmups at 5 p.m. This meet is not a CMSL-sanctioned meet.
On Saturday, July 10, Wahoos will swim at South Carroll. The meet begins at 9 a.m. with warmups at 8 a.m.
Go Wahoos!

A Note from Kay Browning, Wahoos Volunteers Rep!Congratulations to all Wahoos swimmers who competed in the meet onSaturday. Even though we did not win, many swimmers had best times.Check out the swim team bulletin board to see who was chosen as theswimmers of the week. *Thanks* to the many parent volunteers who worked during the meet. Unfortunately we had more than 10 volunteers who did not show up totheir assignments. As you saw on Saturday it takes all of us toensure the meet moves smoothly. Please review the volunteer assignmentson the pool bulletin board and in the e-mail sent to all swim teamfamilies. If you cannot work during your assigned position, we wouldappreciate it if you let us know early in the week. It would be muchappreciated if you could try to make a switch with another family orfind a substitute.

Tight Races at 1st Meet
The Wahoos narrowly missed a win at the first meet v. Dulaney. We were strong in some age categories. Lacked a little depth in other age groups. Through it all Wahoos swimmers showed grit and determination.
Yearround swimmers had a slight edge due to rigorous and frequent practices during the school year. Summer swimmers jumped in to the pool earlier this summer from lacrosse, softball, baseball, soccer, track, band, and any number of other activities. With only a few weeks of practice, summer swimmers quickly got up to speed.
As Coach Jill pointed out at the pre-meet pep talk/cheer session, Wahoos swimmers have only had two morning practices and a few weeks of afterschool practices to get ready for the 2010 season. Thanks to #Snomageddon and an extended school year, summer swim season got a late start.
Scenes from the meet...

Our coaches!
Matt broke the old pool record of 16.73 in the Free with 16.22! Way to go Matt!
Birthday Wishes to swimmer K.C.!

He insisted that a fifth place finish in a race could have just as much impact on the outcome of a meet as the first place finish.I don't know about you, but I love that in swimming each swimmer can make a contribution to the team even if the swimmer does not come in first.

There are a few open spots - Timers for 2nd half in lanes 5 and 8 I believe, and concessions could use a few hands. If you are interested in filling in on those spots please email - Kay B., C2swim@verizon.net or Mary Pat, marypatjordan@aol.com as soon as possible. Thanks for volunteering!

Urgent! Stroke and Turn Judges Needed!
Swim Team Families! We are in urgent need of some HELP . . .
After reviewing the volunteer sign up forms, we noticed that we do not have enough Stroke and Turn Judges.
At this point we only have 4 of the 15 spots covered and will have to forfeit any meet that we do not provide a stroke and turn judge. To run a meet smoothly we must provide 2-3 volunteers at each meet.
No experience necessary to become a Stroke & Turn Judge. Training provided!
You can practice with our own swimmers at time trials this Saturday (there is no official judging at time trials).
Please let Mary Pat or Lynda know if you are interested in helping in this area.

- Each volunteer would work a maximum of half of a meet.
- You don't have to have a swimming background to be a judge.
- You'll receive complete training assisted by a video tape with many examples that will provide all the information you need to be a judge.
- If you have already volunteered in a different area, we can easily switch you.
- Great front row view of all events in the meet.
- Small group training with Coach Jill and a CMSL referee at West Howard for less than an hour.
- The great feeling that comes with volunteering.
Please let Mary Pat or Lynda know if you are interested in helping in this area.
